Five

I would like to know when this...

Bella

turned into this.

Birthday Girl

Please let me know asap. Because I just took that first picture last month, I SWEAR.

We gave her a big batch of princess dolls and four hours later after we finally released every one of them and their hair and their crown and their necklace and their itty bitty shoes and their matching cardboard card from the 4,012 pieces of packaging, she scurried upstairs with them and played by herself for hours. After a while, I went in to play with her. She told me she would like to be alone with her princesses.

Minnie Pancakes

I made her Minnie Mouse pancakes with chocolate chip eyes and a bacon bow. Because I like to show my love with breakfast.

We had a nice family party on her birthday, mainly as an excuse to get a bunch of us together and motivate me to clean up the house. Then the next weekend she had 15 little friends over for a Minnie Mouse party, mainly as an excuse for cake, chaos, and a pinata.

I had a lot of fun making the Rainbow Cake we had seen on Martha. Bella began requesting it about two months ago.

Rainbow Cake

I have to say, cake-wise, we all vastly preferred Brent's birthday banana cake with cream cheese frosting.  [recipe], but this was definitely a show-stopper. When I put it on the table at her preschooler party, I said, "Oh shoot! I feel terrible! Bella asked for a rainbow cake and I totally forgot!! Look, it's just vanilla!" (I had carefully frosted it with plain white swiss buttercream) so I got the kids to say magic words over it to magically make it rainbow before I cut into it, and while we're doing it I look over at Bella, wondering if she'll say anything, since she hung out with me the whole time I was making it and knows for a fact it is rainbow, and she is looking enchanted, hanging on every magical word and I think, Aha! Five is not that old. Thank goodness.

My Family Cookbook

If you've talked to me at all in the last few months, I guarantee you have heard about the Family Cookbook I was making. And for that I apologize. You know how some projects drive you insane? It was all I could talk about. At work: "How was your weekend I'm making a cookbook!" At the grocery store: "Where is the blue cheese spread I'm making a cookbook!" At the coffee shop: "Hi! Cookbook!" At knitting: "Cookbook, cookbook, cookbook, yarn, my kids drive me crazy, cookbook!"

I spent forever on this project (as my dad can attest, having loaned me all the family recipes over a year ago).

I wanted it to be special, professional, useful, fairly comprehensive (at least from my dad's perspective) and lasting. It was my dad's Christmas gift and I was so proud of how it turned out. I upgraded to premium paper and a dust jacket. It looked really sharp. I highly recommend Blurb.com if you ever have self-publishing fantasies. I also ordered two for my girls (which they will not be allowed to touch for another 15 years due to  high degrees of stickiness and irresistible impulses to break dance on everything).

Auld Lang Slice

We have a wonderful New Years tradition of making pizza with my cousin.

Cooper's Pizza

Pizza Dough

Cutting the Pizza

The Pizza Pies

As you can see, we don't mess around. Boiling vats of pizza.

Brent

Maybe we mess around a little. Toasting the new year. Playing video games. We stayed for a completely indecent 9 hours (SHAME on us! Seriously!). What great hosts our cousins are!

Racing

So great, in fact, that when it was discovered at 10:15 pm that Bella's blankie must have been left at their house, I just couldn't quite bring myself to call them. (However a pick up was quickly arranged this morning.)

To celebrate blankie's return, we took him out to a fancy New Year's brunch. We had a Groupon for Kozlak's Royal Oaks that was about to expire and decided to risk taking our kids with us. We needn't have worried, they have quite an appetite for breakfast food and were very entertained by all the 'bars'--omelette bar, pickle bar (actually the bloody mary bar), sundae bar. The band even played them Twinkle Twinkle Little Star (Bella shyly requested it). It was a very nice way to kick off a new year. I forgot my camera so didn't get any pictures, which was not a nice way to kick off a new year.

The new year always motivates me to make resolutions. I looked back at last year's list, and was totally shocked to realize I actually did most of those things. Wow! I have made a new list for 2011, here's to hoping that list goes as well! I'd love to hear any of your resolutions!
